This is me on vacation on the beautiful Hawaiian Island of Kauai. As you can see, I'm one of those people who use their hands when they talk. I guess it's in my blood because my father does the same thing.
My wife Anne-Lise with my mother Sanni. We'd just finished a wonderful and healthy dinner at the Postcards cafe in beautiful Hanalei on the north shore of Kauai when a friendly woman came by selling leighs made from local flowers. The north shore is often rainy but the views of the surrounding mountains and the lush plant life make this part of the island my personal favorite. This picture is taken the next morning: the last morning we had on the island.
This is my father in Plantagenet. Sanni and Bob live on a farm, about half way between Ottawa and Montreal. Their house is quite unusual, with lots of wood and a high ceiling in the center. They currently have horses, cows, chickens, dogs, and cats!
My twin brother Danny. We're hanging out on the beach near Santa Cruz. It's sunny and warm. Definitely a hat day!
This is my sister Katya. We call her Kotty. She's studying engineering at McGill in Montreal. She's also into timber framing.
My uncle Lew, at his place, after feasting on Dungenous crabs. We're all very full and satisfied, but sleepy.
Debbie Debbie, standing in front of Lew's place in San Francisco. Debbie and Lew have been living together for so long, they are defacto married.
Malcolm is Sanni's mother's brother's son. I guess that makes him my cousin. He's a car nut of sorts. Here he is hiking with Danny in New Hampshire.
This is my mother Annie with her dear friend Mel. They live in Seattle, Washington. This picture was taken on a rainy hike at Deception Pass. She loves to hike!
Ben hangin' on Maui. Ben is our half brother: Annie is our mother and his. He lives a very different lifestyle, but we both love the Hawaiian Islands.
Rudy at home in Alexandria. Rudy is Anne-Lise's father. He likes to travel all over the world. Home is about half way between Ottawa and Montreal, not too far from Daddy and Sanni's place in Plantagenet.
Clasina at home in Alexandria. Clasina is Anne-Lise's mother. She put on quite the feast for christmas! This is one of those rare moments when she's sitting down.
Anne-Lise's older brother Wolf getting a break from the kids.
Anne-Lise's twin sister Erica. What are the odds?
Anne-Lise's younger brother Bobby during the present openning festivities this lost christmas.
Carl Watts is a fellow Smalltalk programmer and user interface designer. He rides his recumbent bicycle or public transit to get about. He's the only person I know who lives in the bay area without a car. Carl is the president of Applied Thought.
Doug Macklem went to Carleton University with my brother and I. We were all working on our undergraduate computer science degrees. We all learned Smalltalk together on Dougs Macintosh Plus using good old Apple Smalltalk-80. We became close friends over the years. Doug is in a wheelchair, but that hasn't slowed him down: he is now working for Dave Thomas at OTI (makers of ENVY, now part of IBM).
Doug's mother Geraldine. This was the first time we'd seen her in a while. She's just finishing a new house in Arnprior that'll have plenty of room for herself and Doug. Geraldine is one strong woman. She won't let anything or anyone stand in her way!
Eric Arseneau is a friend from way back in our high school days. We introoduced him to computers and he picked it up very quickly. He's been doing Smalltalk consulting for many years now. He is constantly trying new things, and recently tried sky diving and scuba diving. Here he is at the motorcycle store, where he bought a Honda sportbike he named Taz.
Anne-Lise is quite at home in the water, whether snorkeling, scuba diving, or simply swimming. This picture was taken by Carl on a weekend in Monterey. Her diving buddy is Jackie Mullerworth, Eric's sweetheart and another scuba nut. Anne-Lise is wearing a dry suit, which she got in Seattle after finishing her open water diving course in the frigid Puget Sound: putting on a wet wet-suit for a second dive is no fun at all, especially when it's snowing!
Ken Iisaka is yet another Smalltalk programmer. He is also a pianist, and an avid cyclist. Ken and Katie can often be seen riding one sort of tandem or another. They currently ride a Bilenky and a Rans Screamer, both of which have couplers allowing the entire frame to be broken into pieces for easy airplane transport. Ken is also an avid photographer, to say the least. You can blame him for my constantly growing collection of lenses :-)
Katie is Ken's wife and longtime childhood friend. They got married about the same time we did. They were living in Tokyo, but are in the process of moving now. In fact, they're staying with us right now.
Ansel playing happily with a big log while Peter and Katie watch. Ansel is Ken and Katie's son. He's between 1 and 2 years old, and learning new things all the time.
Manon, Danny Pash's girlfriend. I hear they're going to get married this summer, which is great! He recently completed flight training for the Boeing 757, and they seem to enjoy their new place, which is east of Ottawa, but much closer than Plantagenet or Alexandria.
Tanya Tanya Pash at New Hong Luck Restaurant in Ottawa. Sorry, no picture of Danny Pash.

Mark van Gulik is probably my most unusual friend. Having a conversation with him is simultaneously very taxing and very rewarding. Marks mind works very differently from my own, and some of the ideas he has are truly remarkable, if you can understand them!
Geckos may not be people, but I couldn't think of a better place to put them! Anne-Lise built a fancy cage complete with plexiglass walls and such for her 2 geckos. They're not easy to capture on film. The cage is large and has many places to hide. Here I attempted to shoot a gecko while feeding on tropical fruit baby food. I used the mirror lockup and self timer features of my camera for the first time. This is when I discovered that AE doesn't work with mirror lockup. Depth of field must be quite small in order to keep the screen at the front of the cage from appearing. For this reason, the self timer was not ideal. I've since snarfed a cable release from Ken.
