This shot was taken near the start of a very long hike near Point Reyes. These cones caught my eye, and I like how the shot turned out. We looked at a map and planned to hike to the beach and back, but after more miles than my feet care to remember, we ended up at a youth hostel a bit before dark. Ken hitched a ride to pick up the car, and we ate supper at Saji, in San Francisco: exquisite sushi.
A lone California poppy near Point Reyes. They're in bloom all over. They close up at night into narrow tubes, and open again the next day. Colors vary from yellow to orange, with some having darker fringes.
After a good distance we came to this clearing. It felt like we were close to the beach, but in fact we had a good distance to go. You can see Anne-Lise and Danny ahead of me on the trail to the right.
We finally reach the sea! I think the point you see here is where the lighthouse sits. From here the trail wanders, and it took quite a while longer to finally reach the beach. Anne-Lise was eager, and had already gone well ahead.
On the beach!
Danny on the beach at Point Reyes.
A tree near the beach. I wanted to capture the whole thing, but couldn't even with my shortest lens.
When we tried to go back, we discovered our trail onward was closed, and they routed us along the beach for a good ways. Along the way, there were several places with neat erosion effects like this.
Heading back onto trails, Anne-Lise and I stop to put our shoes back on.
After too many miles, the sun was getting low on the horizon and we were still far from our car. With the trail closed, we'd have to walk on the road too. Ken saved the day by hitching a ride from this youth hostel to the car, so we didn't have to walk any further :-)
