Upper and lower Yosemite falls, viewed from the valley floor. We took
the short walk to the base of these falls after our afternoon arrival in
Yosemite. |

My brother Danny and I sitting on a bench. We're on a short walk in
the valley. |

The day of our big hike. We planned on getting to the top of Half Dome,
a long hike, especially for us, since we're staying quite a ways away from
the valley floor, at the old Wawona Hotel. This is the first bridge on
our hike up the Mist trail. We're just getting started, and still energetic.
It's a hot day, but we have our water filter, so we've got plenty to drink. |

A strange plant we saw near Half Dome. Maybe it's a fungus
of some kind? |
 |
This is as close to Half Dome as we got. We simply ran out
of energy and ran out of time. It was a very long hike as it was, and we
just made it back in time to get some food at the cafeteria. You can see
Half Dome in the background, and you can see just how exhausted we were.

The view from the above vantage point. It was truly spectacular.
The air was noticeably thinner. |

Our way back down was different. We crossed the top of the
Nevada fall, which is where this picture was taken. From there, we took
the John Muir trail down. This is a slow route, more for horses than for
hikers, but it probably saved our knees a lot of wear and tear. Anne-Lise
very much wanted to get to the cable portion of the hike: the part that
actually goes up the rock face. I doubt my vertigo would let me do that
part, but I was eager to find out. Maybe next time we'll camp in the upper
valley and make an assault on the dome the next day. |
