Biking

These are some of my favorite bike ride photos. Biking is my long-time recreation of choice, but I rarely bring a camera. I hope to come up with a good way of carrying my camera on my recumbent, so I can get more of these photos in the future.

Here we are riding in the local hills. I ride an ATP Vision recumbent bicycle. I'm one of those tinkerers who keeps making changes to my bikes (I also do mountain biking). The above seat steering gives me a great place to mount my mirrors and trip computer. The seat angle is adjustable, and since this picture was taken, I've raised it significantly from the fully reclined position. I've installed custom 17 to 104 gear inch gearing and a sprung idler to handle the massive capacity required. That allowed me to do loaded touring with the bike. While the frame flex was noticeable, it worked well. My best loaded climb was 1000 feet elevation gain in under a mile while touring in Vermont! I ride recumbent for comfort, and to give my wrists and hands a break from the keyboard and mouse.
This is the water temple at the Filoli estates. It's just sitting there in all its glory on the side of the road. We often ride there because it makes an excellent rest stop and it's a short ride from our house. On Sundays, the road is closed to car traffic, making it an even better ride.
At the end of camping/biking trip in Big Basin Redwood State Park. I moved my rack from my 'bent to my mountain bike, and loaded it up with panniers, tent, sleeping bag, etc. The bike handled the weight very well, with little frame flex. Weight distribution was really different, of course, but even that was an advantage at times, such as when going downhill. My mountain bike is an old Cannondale I bought from my friend Greg Levonian years ago. The paint is terrible, but the fat aluminium tubes do their job, and the frame geometry is excellent. My one concession to suspension is a parallelogram type stem.
Anne-Lise rides a fully suspended GT, while Danny rides a much newer and better looking Cannondale that is virtually identical to mine.
